The publisher of Better Software, Software Quality Engineering, describes the magazine as relevant and timely. It contains “in-depth articles on testing, tools, defect tracking, measurement, requirements, design, development, process improvement, security and management.” It also covers emerging technologies and“expert analysis and real-world case studies in the areas of project management and people, process improvement, requirements, design and development, and test and evaluation.” $32.00 will provide a subscriber 6 issues across the span of a year.

“I want to help raise awareness for pet adoption and rescue,” says Wannan. “I want to encourage others to get involved and share their adoption stories. Hearing peoples’ adoption stories will inspire and encourage others to learn more about animal adoption and rescue.”

Content management is an important part of publishing and there are oftentimes difficulties transferring information efficiently among systems designed for paper publication and systems designed for printing to the Web. Many companies resolve data transfer problems by employing designated personnel whose sole responsibility is to copy and paste the content to the Web.

Drupal content management systems are well known for their ability to streamline web publishing practices. They provide web content management solutions for organizations in an open-source format that is easy-to-use, which makes web content management processes accessible to non-technical personnel.

TimeOut family magazines, which include TimeOut New York, TimeOut Kids, TimeOut Chicago, and TimeOut Worldwide, have been using the K4 Publishing System to produce the print versions of the magazines for several years. TimeOut wanted to redesign its website using the Drupal content management systems. The company also wanted to directly connect the K4 Publishing System to the Drupal CMS in order to arrive at a sustainable and more effectual web content management solution.

There was a clear opportunity for TimeOut to gain additional efficiency if it could leverage the power of both systems. Both K4 and Drupal CMS are excellent tools; however, a more efficient integrated solution would require a K4-to-Drupal module to act as a bridge between the two.

TimeOut hired DPCI to implement the K4-to-Drupal module that DPCI had created. DPCI is a content management system consulting business that implements web content management solutions for a wide range of organizations.

By integrating K4 with Drupal CMS the editors at TimeOut were able to publish semantically enriched editorial content directly to designated sections within Drupal. The K4-to-Drupal module leveraged the strength of K4 for content development and allowed for rapid release of articles and images from K4 to Drupal CMS.

The K4-to-Drupal Integration Module permits users to tag articles with keywords and key phrases in order to improve search engine efficiency and effectiveness. The website’s value is increased by having the actual content experts enriching and managing the metadata. In addition, the K4-to-Drupal module supports multiple concurrent work flows, reduces keystroke errors, and saves time.

The strength of the K4 Publishing System and the versatility of Drupal content management systems have been brought together into an integrated solution to improve TimeOut’s print-to-web work flow.

The K4-to-Drupal module, designed by DPCI is incredibly versatile allowing users to generate titles, URLs, meta-data, keywords, category, body copy, images and sub headings while in the K4 environment and it seamlessly generates into Drupal. In addition to the module capabilities implemented for TimeOut’s requirements, the K4-to-Drupal module may be customized further using a programming language (XSLT) to fit particular publisher needs. In short, the K4-to-Drupal module makes the Drupal CMS a seamless extension of the K4 Publishing System.

The Newsletter On Newsletters Awards Providence Publications Top Journalism Award For Second Consecutive Year

The Newsletter on Newsletters, a national publication founded in 1964, has announced its annual awards for journalistic acumen. Providence Publications, which includes the industry newsletter Workers’ Comp Executive (WCE), came away with 5 of the awards. The most prestigious of awards, the Award for Public Service, was awarded to Workers’ Comp Executive for its three years of extensive coverage regarding the State Compensation Insurance Fund (SCIF); notably in 2008 as the state agency was facing increased scrutiny from the public and legislature. The Newsletter on Newsletter concluded in its most recent edition, “the Award for Public Service goes to Workers’ Comp Executive, for its reporting of the issues and challenges as a bill opening the agency to the public neared legislative enactment in 2008.

In eight articles, beginning last April and running through September, WCE detailed SCIF’s attempts to gut the measure. By quoting industry executives and attorneys, WCE was able to show how those efforts would make the bill pretty meaningless.” Bess Shapiro is the capitol correspondent credited with coverage along with publisher of WCE, Dale Debber. This is the second year in a row Providence Publications has won the Top Journalism Award for Public Service, having saved insurance consumers last year nearly $6 hundred million.

Upon hearing the news, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger stated, “Good Journalism is essential for good government and I’m proud to have these California journalists recognized in the national community. Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner also comments on the awards. “Workers Comp Executive and its excellent team of writers and editors work tirelessly to pursue the latest developments in the workers’ compensation market,” said California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner. “Congratulations to Dale Debber, Brad Cain and Bess Shapiro for winning these awards and brining their readers their special brand of determined and detailed reporting.”

The award for Best Deadline Reporting also went to Workers’ Comp Executive for its story “SCIF Hides President’s Performance Bonus”. The Newsletter on Newsletters notes, “With California considering an open public records act, editor, Brad Cain and publisher Dale Debber began asking questions about the employment contract of Janet Frank, President, State Compensation Insurance Fund. State Fund refused to release details but Workers’ Comp Executive obtained them anyway. What made the contract particularly interesting was the fact that Frank was in California only four days a week, returning to her home in Denver, Colo., for the remaining three.” The story made public her pay, bonus arrangements and expenses.

Debber commented on the pattern of journalistic integrity utilized in this and all Providence Publications, “Workers’ Comp Executive is the journal of record for California workers’ comp professionals in all facets of the system. While we reflect the views of our audience, we never function as a mouthpiece and hold these same professionals accountable”.

Additionally Workers’ Comp Executive won the award from The Newsletter on Newsletters for Best Feature Article, “The Journalist in the Jury Pool”, by Capitol Correspondent Bess Shapiro. The Newsletter on Newsletters noted in the upcoming December 21st article that “Bess Shapiro’s adherence to professional journalistic ethics was enough to get her booted off a jury. The reason: She honestly told the court that while the Constitution assures a person has the right to remain silent, exercising that right would lead her to assume that the defendant had something to hide and probably was guilty”.

Another award, this one for Best Government Coverage went to Workers’ Comp Executive for its article “Governor Schwarzenegger Puts SCIF on the Block”. The coverage centered on Schwarzenegger’s plan to shore up $1 billion of the state budget deficit by selling the assets of State Fund, also known as SCIF. Publisher Dale Debber learned of the sale before it would be publicly announced, he pursued the issues and wrote a 2400 word piece that would later win the award.

Workers’ Comp Executive’s final award from The Newsletter on Newsletters was in the “Best Newswriting” category. Brad Cain followed the government meetings of the Workers’ Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau of California and learned that the bureau was recommending a 27% increase in workers’ compensation rates. The article, “27% Rate Hike Coming”, immediately sounded alarms in the insurance and business community. The Schwarzenegger administration took notice of the article and on the same day wrote a letter to the Insurance Commissioner urging a rejection to the bureau’s recommended increase. The Insurance Commissioner would reject the increase and as noted in The Newsletter on Newsletters, “Workers’ Comp Executive’s early reporting alerted the entire workers’ comp community including the commissioner and the governor that workers’ compensation rates were starting to creep up.”

Book Tells The Tales Of Discarded Dogs Who Become Helping Heros

In her newly published book, New Lives: Stories of Rescued Dogs Helping, Healing and Giving Hope, Joanne Wannan tells the stories of abused, abandoned and discarded dogs who are now playing the roles of heroes in animal therapy, and as service dogs. From a Dalmatian who was scheduled to be euthanized to one of Michael Vick’s fighting bit pulls, the dogs in Wannan’s book have overcome tremendous obstacles, yet have gone on to work with humans, creating NEW LIVES for them both.

Lottie Dot was instead abandoned by her breeder in the middle of a ferocious Oklahoma winter storm. The little pup was rescued by her son, and Patricia Belt quickly claimed Lottie Dot as her own. When it was discovered that Lottie was deaf, Patricia taught her dog sign language and enrolled her in classes to become a “therapy dog.” Today Lottie volunteers at hospitals, gives demonstrations at a school for deaf children, and participates in a reading program, which promotes literacy by having children read aloud to a dog. “Lottie can’t hear these precious kids read a single word,” Patricia says. “She listens in a different way; with her heart.”

As a part of Michael Vick’s dogfight operation, Dr. Leo, as he is now affectionately called, was doomed. When authorities stepped in, they disbanded the operation and ordered that each pit bull be evaluated and placed with rescue organizations if possible. Dr. Leo was found to be non-aggressive, but filled with anxiety and lacking in socialization skills. “It’s not that he wasn’t friendly; he just didn’t understand about love, or what he was here for,” his new owner Marthina McClay comments. Dr. Leo is now w wonderful “therapy” dog, visiting patients in a chemotherapy ward, and acting as an ambassador for abused dogs everywhere when he visits a juvenile detention home.

Dropped from a four story building ,and landing on his backside, Dobie, a tiny black Labrador retriever puppy, was left for dead. Thanks to the love of Richard Bartel anddonations of over $90,000 to the University of Minnesota Foundation, Dobie is now alive, well and an active participant in Therapy Dogs International that provides well-trained dogs who visit hospitals, schools and senior homes.

Wannan’s stories are filled with the reality of animal abuse, but also with love, hope and information on the many organizations around the world that help with rescue, housing and adoption of discarded dogs. As Wannan puts it, “These are truly inspiring stories of dogs that were once ‘throwaways,’ and of the lives they have changed.”

Dr. Marty Becker, the resident veterinarian on Good Morning America says, “This book will appeal to animal lovers of all ages, to those interested in learning about animal therapy and to those who advocate for shelter dogs. But mostly, it will appeal to anyone who loves a heart-warming story, where the underdog triumphs in the end.”
