Twin Rivers Customizes Publishing Papers to Target Religious Text Applications

Premium Hybrid and Freesheet Offering Delivers Value and Quality

Madawaska, ME, October 08, 2014 — /EPR MEDIA NEWS/ — Understanding the challenges facing religious publishers and printers, Twin Rivers Paper Company tailored a portfolio of lightweight Premium Hybrid and Freesheet papers to deliver value and quality for spiritual scripture, inspirational non-fiction and study guides.

“Whether it is paper cost, supply chain logistics, quality or ease of doing business, publishers and printers are being asked to do more for less in delivering evangelical materials around the world,” said Robert Hutchins, Product Manager. “As an experienced supplier, we know this market. For the last 20 years our Freesheet grades set industry standards while our Premium Hybrid papers are driving market innovation.”

With an 80+ year legacy of papermaking, Twin Rivers is one of the primary North American manufacturers of lightweight opaque Freesheet papers, a category widely used for scriptural applications because of strength and printability. Understanding the market need for options, Twin Rivers pioneered the Premium Hybrid category, formulated with the optimal blend of Groundwood and Freesheet fiber to deliver opacity, strength and value.

“Our Premium Hybrid papers have transformed other publishing markets like financial printing and reference. We know once religious publishers and printers become more familiar with our blended products they will appreciate the unique benefits of the offering. Premium Hybrid can translate into a significant advantage for a publisher,” added Hutchins. “Our papers provide options that support brand image while stretching budgets to expand reach.”

Core papers for religious text applications include Custom Brite® and Bridge Supreme®. Custom Brite is a Freesheet paper available in 22-40 lb. basis weights while Bridge Supreme is a Premium Hybrid paper available in 18-38 lb. basis weights, with added hybrid capability extending up to 40 lb. Both grades are designed for this technical application; optimizing readability, performance and aesthetics.

Additionally, Twin Rivers manufacturers a robust line of publishing papers that can be engineered to meet the needs of a wide array of applications. The company is known for its lightweight manufacturing flexibility, excellent service platforms and willingness to co-develop customized solutions. Paper characteristics including fiber furnish, bulk, basis weight and brightness drive a needs-based approach to paper selection.

Magazine Subscriptions Demystify Online Shopping

Forrester research indicates that, by the end of 2011, Americans will spend around $200 billion in online purchases. They also predict that by the year 2015, U.S. retail sales will well surpass the $275 billion mark. This growth in ecommerce is being attributed to existing shoppers pushing their online shopping boundaries by purchasing more items off the World Wide Web like home appliances and furniture in addition to increasing spending in traditionally popular online shopping categories such as books and media. Also driving the numbers are consumers who are turning to the internet as a shopping resource for the very first time.

Print magazine publishers are looking to be a part of this dynamic and rapidly expanding online retail marketplace. By partnering with various online retail sites, popular discount magazines which are available as low cost, promotional subscriptions and have over the years cultivated a loyal readership base, will be able to avail their readers of opportunities to buy items featured within their publications via online sales portals.

Magazine aficionados who hold their magazine subscriptions dear will find the explorations being made by publishers to harmonize print magazine content with online retail sites advantageous. Magazine lovers need not renounce their love for the printed periodical but can use it instead as a trusted guide to chaperone them through their online shopping experience. Magazines and cheap magazine subscriptions will become especially invaluable tools for all consumers who feel intimidated when purchasing items from the internet or who have heretofore felt reluctant to shop online.

In recent years, many publications have shifted their focus from print to digital magazines, in some cases completely revamping their online presence. While some have found great success in the switch, making the entire magazine available online, while others have struggled to get footholds in the online arena opting to only post specific content from the current issue. In either case, the content is usually free, which leads to the other problem: whether or not online magazines are profitable from a business standpoint. The primary reason for this trepidation is that the internet is still considered an unstable marketing tool.

Magazine lovers however can enjoy a choice of online or print magazines and save on annual subscriptions, sometimes getting a whole year’s worth of magazines for the cost of just two or three at stand prices.

The Co-operative Magazine releases results of latest online poll

The Co-operative Magazine has revealed the result of its latest web-based poll, which asked readers ‘how much of your weekly shop goes in the bin?’

Of those magazine readers who took part in the survey, 61 per cent stated that less than 10 per cent of products from their weekly food shop go in the bin. This is contrary to the national findings, which suggest that the majority of households in the UK waste around a quarter (25 per cent) of their food each week.

“These results suggest that our readers are shrewder and less wasteful than the national average,” said Jeanette Franks, editor of the magazine.

“With tips on how to cut your weekly shopping bill and features on how to make delicious meals using leftovers, our readers have the information they need to ensure that they only buy what they need and they therefore end up using the majority of it each week. We encourage people to shop more frequently and only buy the items they need, rather than doing a big weekly shop which inevitably leads to wasted food and money,” Franks added.

Other related articles and features in The Co-operative Magazine include: A Quick Guide to Recycling in the Home, and Waste Not Want Not, both in the ethical living section, as well as low-fat meal ideas and tips for how to keep the kids health and happy.

The online magazine aims to be interesting and informative, as well as to bring daily news on a wide variety of subjects, from fairtrade and the recent E-Coli outbreak, to the state of the housing market and the latest news in travel and leisure. It also gives readers the chance to browse a huge variety of features and guides and to leave their own tips and comments for fellow readers to benefit from. The online magazine is interactive and many people have already made reading it a part of their daily routine.

Wired Magazine Announces Its Wired 100

Wired Magazine UK has published its inaugural who’s-who list of the key power brokers in the digital realm to celebrate its one-year anniversary. The new list covers who the people are who shape the world of technology? Which influencers can make or break a product launch or determine how people spend their leisure time?

The Wired list was compiled with the suggestions and insight of 120 anonymous experts across the digital spectrum, in order to arrive at this selection of the best of the best behind internet based companies, digital business strategies, communication, music and social networking.

Topping the list is Google UK CEO Matt Brittin, who led the British arm of the search behemoth through troubles such as monopoly allegations and the controversial launch of Google Buzz to company-wide profits of £15.9 billion. Other tech heavyweights in the fray of the top ten include Pascal Cagni, vice president of Apple EMEA, at number three; Ashley Highfield, managing director of Microsoft UK at number nine; and Spotify CEO Daniel Ek rounding out the top tier after revolutionising the way music is listened to online with the company’s ad-sponsored service.

A number of independent entries appear as well, with venture capitalists Saul Klein and Bernard Liautaud landing at numbers two and eight, with Klein propping up successful web ventures Skype and Lovefilm, and Liautaud netting £4.5 billion for the sale of his software company, Business Objects, in 2008. Partially due to his 1.2 million Twitter followers, actor and commentator Stephen Fry finishes at number seven on the list.

Newsmen James Murdoch and Erik Huggers go neck-and-neck at positions four and five, with Murdoch’s News Corporation challenging Huggers’ BBC site for market share in online news. Politicians also make a splash in the top rung, as the coordinator of the Conservative Party’s digital political machine Rishi Saha reaches number six.

However, the entire list of 100 is filled with movers and shakers in the digital realm. Notably making the number 20 spot is Alex Balfour, head of new media for the London 2012 Olympics. With preparations for the Summer 2012 games well underway, and construction on London’s Olympic Park in progress, Balfour, cofounder of cricinfo.com, has promised to deliver the most digitally-integrated Olympic games yet, harnessing mobile social engagement on a massive scale.

Web Content Management Solutions For Print-to-Web Work Flow

TimeOut family magazines were looking to implement tailored web content management solutions for their business. The project required the integration of TimeOut’s powerful K4 Publishing System used for the print versions of their magazines with the power and versatility of Drupal content management systems for web publishing.

Web Content Management Solutions For Print-to-Web Work Flow

Content management is an important part of publishing and there are oftentimes difficulties transferring information efficiently among systems designed for paper publication and systems designed for printing to the Web. Many companies resolve data transfer problems by employing designated personnel whose sole responsibility is to copy and paste the content to the Web.

Drupal content management systems are well known for their ability to streamline web publishing practices. They provide web content management solutions for organizations in an open-source format that is easy-to-use, which makes web content management processes accessible to non-technical personnel.

TimeOut family magazines, which include TimeOut New York, TimeOut Kids, TimeOut Chicago, and TimeOut Worldwide, have been using the K4 Publishing System to produce the print versions of the magazines for several years. TimeOut wanted to redesign its website using the Drupal content management systems. The company also wanted to directly connect the K4 Publishing System to the Drupal CMS in order to arrive at a sustainable and more effectual web content management solution.

There was a clear opportunity for TimeOut to gain additional efficiency if it could leverage the power of both systems. Both K4 and Drupal CMS are excellent tools; however, a more efficient integrated solution would require a K4-to-Drupal module to act as a bridge between the two.

TimeOut hired DPCI to implement the K4-to-Drupal module that DPCI had created. DPCI is a content management system consulting business that implements web content management solutions for a wide range of organizations.

By integrating K4 with Drupal CMS the editors at TimeOut were able to publish semantically enriched editorial content directly to designated sections within Drupal. The K4-to-Drupal module leveraged the strength of K4 for content development and allowed for rapid release of articles and images from K4 to Drupal CMS.

The K4-to-Drupal Integration Module permits users to tag articles with keywords and key phrases in order to improve search engine efficiency and effectiveness. The website’s value is increased by having the actual content experts enriching and managing the metadata. In addition, the K4-to-Drupal module supports multiple concurrent work flows, reduces keystroke errors, and saves time.

The strength of the K4 Publishing System and the versatility of Drupal content management systems have been brought together into an integrated solution to improve TimeOut’s print-to-web work flow.

The K4-to-Drupal module, designed by DPCI is incredibly versatile allowing users to generate titles, URLs, meta-data, keywords, category, body copy, images and sub headings while in the K4 environment and it seamlessly generates into Drupal. In addition to the module capabilities implemented for TimeOut’s requirements, the K4-to-Drupal module may be customized further using a programming language (XSLT) to fit particular publisher needs. In short, the K4-to-Drupal module makes the Drupal CMS a seamless extension of the K4 Publishing System.

The Newsletter On Newsletters Awards Providence Publications Top Journalism Award For Second Consecutive Year

The Newsletter on Newsletters, a national publication founded in 1964, has announced its annual awards for journalistic acumen. Providence Publications, which includes the industry newsletter Workers’ Comp Executive (WCE), came away with 5 of the awards. The most prestigious of awards, the Award for Public Service, was awarded to Workers’ Comp Executive for its three years of extensive coverage regarding the State Compensation Insurance Fund (SCIF); notably in 2008 as the state agency was facing increased scrutiny from the public and legislature. The Newsletter on Newsletter concluded in its most recent edition, “the Award for Public Service goes to Workers’ Comp Executive, for its reporting of the issues and challenges as a bill opening the agency to the public neared legislative enactment in 2008.

In eight articles, beginning last April and running through September, WCE detailed SCIF’s attempts to gut the measure. By quoting industry executives and attorneys, WCE was able to show how those efforts would make the bill pretty meaningless.” Bess Shapiro is the capitol correspondent credited with coverage along with publisher of WCE, Dale Debber. This is the second year in a row Providence Publications has won the Top Journalism Award for Public Service, having saved insurance consumers last year nearly $6 hundred million.

Upon hearing the news, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger stated, “Good Journalism is essential for good government and I’m proud to have these California journalists recognized in the national community. We stand with all Californians in recognizing Providence Publications for its great journalism and many awards this year. Dale, Bess, and Brad are familiar faces around the Capitol and I join the whole Capitol community in recognizing not only the efforts of the whole Providence Publications team, but in thanking them for the kind of accurate and fair reporting they do. I am delighted that they brought so many prestigious awards back to California.”

Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner also comments on the awards. “Workers Comp Executive and its excellent team of writers and editors work tirelessly to pursue the latest developments in the workers’ compensation market,” said California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner. “Congratulations to Dale Debber, Brad Cain and Bess Shapiro for winning these awards and brining their readers their special brand of determined and detailed reporting.”

The award for Best Deadline Reporting also went to Workers’ Comp Executive for its story “SCIF Hides President’s Performance Bonus”. The Newsletter on Newsletters notes, “With California considering an open public records act, editor, Brad Cain and publisher Dale Debber began asking questions about the employment contract of Janet Frank, President, State Compensation Insurance Fund. State Fund refused to release details but Workers’ Comp Executive obtained them anyway. What made the contract particularly interesting was the fact that Frank was in California only four days a week, returning to her home in Denver, Colo., for the remaining three.” The story made public her pay, bonus arrangements and expenses.

Debber commented on the pattern of journalistic integrity utilized in this and all Providence Publications, “Workers’ Comp Executive is the journal of record for California workers’ comp professionals in all facets of the system. While we reflect the views of our audience, we never function as a mouthpiece and hold these same professionals accountable”.

Additionally Workers’ Comp Executive won the award from The Newsletter on Newsletters for Best Feature Article, “The Journalist in the Jury Pool”, by Capitol Correspondent Bess Shapiro. The Newsletter on Newsletters noted in the upcoming December 21st article that “Bess Shapiro’s adherence to professional journalistic ethics was enough to get her booted off a jury. The reason: She honestly told the court that while the Constitution assures a person has the right to remain silent, exercising that right would lead her to assume that the defendant had something to hide and probably was guilty”.

Another award, this one for Best Government Coverage went to Workers’ Comp Executive for its article “Governor Schwarzenegger Puts SCIF on the Block”. The coverage centered on Schwarzenegger’s plan to shore up $1 billion of the state budget deficit by selling the assets of State Fund, also known as SCIF. Publisher Dale Debber learned of the sale before it would be publicly announced, he pursued the issues and wrote a 2400 word piece that would later win the award.

Workers’ Comp Executive’s final award from The Newsletter on Newsletters was in the “Best Newswriting” category. Brad Cain followed the government meetings of the Workers’ Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau of California and learned that the bureau was recommending a 27% increase in workers’ compensation rates. The article, “27% Rate Hike Coming”, immediately sounded alarms in the insurance and business community. The Schwarzenegger administration took notice of the article and on the same day wrote a letter to the Insurance Commissioner urging a rejection to the bureau’s recommended increase. The Insurance Commissioner would reject the increase and as noted in The Newsletter on Newsletters, “Workers’ Comp Executive’s early reporting alerted the entire workers’ comp community including the commissioner and the governor that workers’ compensation rates were starting to creep up.”
