“Questionable Minds,” a New Book: Conversations with Writers about Writing

OTTAWA, Ontario CANADA, 2017-Feb-15 — /EPR Network/ — The mind of a writer is a mysterious place. In Questionable Minds: conversations with writers, social psychologist dr george pollard gives a guided tour of the creative mental landscape of writers. In this unique collection of conversations, dr pollard explores the making of a fictional story or a stand-up comedy routine.

If you’re curious how your favourite novel or stand-up comedy routine comes into being, Questionable Minds helps you find out. This new book helps answer many questions. Where do the ideas come from? How do authors develop their characters? What is the secret of writing a successful stand-up comedy routine?

In this eclectic view of the workings of the imagination; dr pollard has assembled a remarkable panel of writers, covering a wide of range of literature. The conversations, in this collection, are with writers of thrillers, satire and westerns, as well as stand-up comedy.

Alessandra Torre tells gripping tales she claims are erotica. Peter Mehlman, a pillar of Seinfeld, has an idiosyncratically ironic eye and smooth, easy writing style. Chris Allen trades in thrillers that may contain more than a hint of truth.

Bruce Holbert is the thriftiest of writers, building finely honed sentences. Victoria Patterson artfully skewers the upper class, of Orange County, California. Steve Berry creates intricate mysteries against a backdrop of notional history. J Scott Fuqua tells tales with words and illustrations that resurrect a bygone era.

Ann Lewis Hamilton writes serious stories in a shrewdly droll style. Gabe Abelson is the A-list writer of late-night television talk show monologues. Jay Bonansinga writes The Walking Dead novels.

What inspires these writers? How do they develop stories or comedy? Why must they write?

To a one, they agree writing is sweating blood that shows up as squiggles on a page or pixels on an e-reader. Writing fiction or stand-up comedy is not for the easily distracted, the indolent or faint of heart. Writers must be eager to chase their characters and stories down the rabbit hole.

Questionable Minds is notable because of the depth and clarity of the insights found in the conversations. The book exhibits a unique intimacy; there’s no sense of canned answers to a list of prepared questions. Instead these conversations move effortlessly, following lines of curiosity and interest, while drawing out a wealth of detail.

Every writer dr pollard talks with has a different story to tell. Each has his or her own sources of inspiration. Their routines are personal; sometimes fitting writing around the rest of their lives or, for a few, squeezing in time for family, if they can drag themselves away from writing.

It is notable how willingly, candid and freely the writers talk. They discuss in detail the motivations that drive them to write. For some it’s enthusiasm; others want to explore their own lives and, perhaps, reframe them in a different context; still others want to discover what happens to their characters, as the story unfolds and still others simply enjoy the act of writing. Questionable Minds is an inside view of some highly distinctive minds, which are absorbing places to explore.

Although dr pollard explores similar themes with each writer, the conversations never become repetitive. Each writer is too distinctive a personality; each brings something fresh to the conversations and our understanding of why writers write. If you wonder how writers do what they do, this book will show you that it’s much more complicated and enthralling than you may imagine; it will improve your reading experience, too.

Questionable Minds is available through Amazon, in paperback and eBook editions at https://www.amazon.com/Questionable-Minds-Conversations-george-pollard. Review copies, in MOBI format, are available from the author at drgeorgep@questionableminds.com. Book Details How New Approaches To Real-Time Data Will Benefit Business, Government And People

Innovative, cheap ways to use real-time data plus removing restrictions to it will help companies make better decisions, streamline and improve government, and empower the public, according to “Data Dynamite,” published today.

The book, subtitled “how data will transform our world,” was written by “data dude” W. David Stephenson, and published by Data4All Press. It is available in e-book and print versions.

The book draws parallels between a potential explosion in uses for data if it becomes accessible to everyone and if new tools make it easy to share and understand, and how publishing of new works bloomed after Luther translated the Bible into German so ordinary people could understand it and printed it rather than having monks copy it. Stephenson says legitimate reasons made it hard for government and companies to gather, process, and disseminate data in the past. Technology removed the barriers, but the old “data scarcity” mentality prevails on the part of management and must be ended.

The book calls for a 4-step process to liberate data:

  • apply “tags” to it the first time it is entered, giving data meaning and context
  • distribute it automatically and in real time, when it will be of most use
  • make it available to everyone in an organization – and often outside it – who needs the data (rather than to just a few elites)
  • provide new Web 2.0 tools letting non-technical users analyze and act on data collaboratively.

The book is aimed at senior managers in business and government and at the general public.

“Data Dynamite” details a wide range of pioneering examples of liberating data, including:

  • online medical records
  • an “Internet of Things” prescription jar that notifies your doctor when you take a pill
  • a Mexican concrete company gaining competitive advantage by operating with real-time data,
  • and an online patient community which shares information on their conditions to help drug companies find cures.

It also outlines principles of liberating data, describes characteristics of companies that liberate data, and concludes with a 13-point “Liberating Data Manifesto.” An entire chapter describes the innovative strategies U.S. CIO Vivek Kundra used while he was the District of Columbia CTO.

Stephenson is principal of Stephenson Strategies, Medfield, Ma, and has an international reputation as a consultant and thought leader in both data and Web 2.0 strategies, especially open data and disaster management strategies that empower the general public.

The book is available from all leading e-book sources, and costs $9.99. The print version retails for $16.99 and is available through Amazon and local bookstores.

Becoming Human Again by Suzanne Meier

“A brilliant and scathing expose of the factors in modern society that enslave us both mentally and physically…You will learn what subtle and not-so-subtle forces are at work to fill your mouth with poison, control the thoughts in your head, and steal the time you need to make life worth living and to enjoy the fruits of your labor.” ~ Howard Patterson, Reviewer

“As without, so within. As within, so without. We can be so much more than androids. Awaken the hibernating human essence.” These few, deceptively simple, sentences might be said to sum up Suzanne Meier’s new book, Becoming Human Again: From Sheeple to People. In it, she points out what dehumanized and empty lives most people lead and strenuously encourages readers to escape society’s predictive programming and instead start thinking for themselves.

“We have let our insides wither and rot,” claims Meier, “and therefore the outer world resembles this.”

By turning within, instead of toward shopping, entertainment, political groups, or any of the myriad mind- and life-numbing distractions available to us twenty-four hours a day, Meier says we can activate the human core again. She affirms that a life disconnected from the inner, from nature, and from others causes grief. To sum it up, she quips, “The masses choose screens over greens.”

Chapters include “Our Way of Life Isn’t Sustaining Us,” “Work Isn’t Working,” “Relationships Don’t Relate,” “Food Gone Wrong,” and “Dumbed Down – Deliberately.” Meier also addresses what she calls “The Governmental Veil” and concludes with “Becoming Human Again,” from which the book’s title comes.

She notes that for those who are not naturally inclined to explore the inner life, understanding the issues laid out in Becoming Human Againmay be a huge motivator to first disconnect and then to embrace change. She also discusses the provocative idea that wealth and spirituality can co-exist, and that when they do, individuals have won the gamble of living.

Affirms Meier, “According to Lao Tzu, knowing others is wisdom; knowing yourself is Enlightenment.”

Becoming Human Again offers that first precious step towards realization.

Online Graphic Novella For Fans Of Occult Fantasy

Creators Bryan Randall and Ferdee Bambico have teamed up to bring readers a tale of lustful demonic curse upon an unsuspecting convent for their appointed protector. And its effects upon the convent are anything but holy in the nightmarish tale The Protector of the Damned, now available to read with the option to donate at www.resurrectandprotect.viviti.com.

theprotectorbook.jpg (360×539)

In the novel, a bleak prophecy has been revealed to Lilith – “You will all be devoured! You’ve become sustenance in your master’s eyes!” These words come from Naxul – a fallen angel bound to chains of eternal darkness, but also a protector of his own kind. A protector of the damned. Lillith and her coven put up arms against their master, resurrecting the man who once protected them as their weapon of magic. Their fate lies in the outcome of this battle, for they are to pay homage to Naxul if their master is destroyed.

The Protector of the Damned is a story not only of a convent’s fall from grace, but also of occult, mysticism, necrophilia, demon worship and conjuration. There is also a psychological element that ponders the notion that consciousness is an element of the soul. Is consciousness a manifestation of the human spirit? And without it, would we be dead? The Protector of the Damned is a tale that plunges the reader directly into a world of utter darkness – a world in which only the damned can flourish.

The book is also available as a soft cover at Lulu as well as a download for those who prefer a digital reading experience.

New Website Helps Frustrated Book Authors Land a Book Publishing Contract for a Six-Figure Advance

Successfully published book authors have donated their time and knowledge to launch BookProposalWriting.com (http://www.bookproposalwriting.com), a new website to help aspiring authors sell their non-fiction book ideas to book publishers for a six-figure advance.

The book publishing industry holds a closely-guarded secret to getting published by a major book publisher — the secret is writing a persuasive book proposal. Writing a successful book proposal allows book authors to earn a five or six-figure advance before they even start writing their manuscripts.

According to Brian Scott, the site’s creator and publishing director of Payday Publishing, “Many aspiring authors have never heard about a book proposal or how to use one to land a book publishing contract. Instead, these aspiring authors spend several months writing their books, and then grow old shopping their entire manuscripts around to busy book publishers and literary agents. It’s no wonder why many aspiring authors become frustrated and give up. This way does not work today.”

To educate aspiring authors about using a book proposal, BookProposalWriting.com offers a free online “Book Proposal Writing Workshop,” which teaches writers and book authors how to write a book proposal in seven days or less. The Workshop covers important topics such as: “Why write a book proposal first?,” “How to generate ideas to write your book proposal,” “How to write your book’s blurb for your book proposal,” and”How to write your book proposal query letter.” At the end of the Workshop, aspiring book authors can download a free sample book proposal and use it as a working template for their own work-in-progress proposals.

Besides offering a free book proposal workshop, BookProposalWriting.com offers many free how-to articles and audio articles on writing, designing and selling a book, as well as many instructional videos showing step-by-step how to write different components of a book proposal.

BookProposalWriting.com also offers several free downloadable products covering book writing, book marketing, and self-publishing. A few of the website’s products include: “Hot Topics in Book Writing,” “How to Get a Literary Agent,” “Sit Down and Write that Bestselling Novel,” and”Copyright Protection for Book Authors.”

BookProposalWriting.com is not just for authors who want to publish their books the traditional way, but also for self-publishers and independent e-book authors. “Even if you decide to self-publish or write a book as an e-book or a mobile digital book, you should know how to write a book proposal,” said Scott. “If your self-published book becomes a big success, you may want to pitch your book (or book ideas) to a major book publisher or film agent to reap in the financial rewards.”

Book Tells The Tales Of Discarded Dogs Who Become Helping Heros

In her newly published book, New Lives: Stories of Rescued Dogs Helping, Healing and Giving Hope, Joanne Wannan tells the stories of abused, abandoned and discarded dogs who are now playing the roles of heroes in animal therapy, and as service dogs. From a Dalmatian who was scheduled to be euthanized to one of Michael Vick’s fighting bit pulls, the dogs in Wannan’s book have overcome tremendous obstacles, yet have gone on to work with humans, creating NEW LIVES for them both.

Lottie Dot was instead abandoned by her breeder in the middle of a ferocious Oklahoma winter storm. The little pup was rescued by her son, and Patricia Belt quickly claimed Lottie Dot as her own. When it was discovered that Lottie was deaf, Patricia taught her dog sign language and enrolled her in classes to become a “therapy dog.” Today Lottie volunteers at hospitals, gives demonstrations at a school for deaf children, and participates in a reading program, which promotes literacy by having children read aloud to a dog. “Lottie can’t hear these precious kids read a single word,” Patricia says. “She listens in a different way; with her heart.”

As a part of Michael Vick’s dogfight operation, Dr. Leo, as he is now affectionately called, was doomed. When authorities stepped in, they disbanded the operation and ordered that each pit bull be evaluated and placed with rescue organizations if possible. Dr. Leo was found to be non-aggressive, but filled with anxiety and lacking in socialization skills. “It’s not that he wasn’t friendly; he just didn’t understand about love, or what he was here for,” his new owner Marthina McClay comments. Dr. Leo is now w wonderful “therapy” dog, visiting patients in a chemotherapy ward, and acting as an ambassador for abused dogs everywhere when he visits a juvenile detention home.

Dropped from a four story building ,and landing on his backside, Dobie, a tiny black Labrador retriever puppy, was left for dead. Thanks to the love of Richard Bartel anddonations of over $90,000 to the University of Minnesota Foundation, Dobie is now alive, well and an active participant in Therapy Dogs International that provides well-trained dogs who visit hospitals, schools and senior homes.

Wannan’s stories are filled with the reality of animal abuse, but also with love, hope and information on the many organizations around the world that help with rescue, housing and adoption of discarded dogs. As Wannan puts it, “These are truly inspiring stories of dogs that were once ‘throwaways,’ and of the lives they have changed.”

Dr. Marty Becker, the resident veterinarian on Good Morning America says, “This book will appeal to animal lovers of all ages, to those interested in learning about animal therapy and to those who advocate for shelter dogs. But mostly, it will appeal to anyone who loves a heart-warming story, where the underdog triumphs in the end.”

Your Family Constitution: A Modern Approach To Family Values & Household Structure Is A Back-To-School Must Read

Amidst the flurry of back-to-school activities, families brace for a return to discipline and order, signaling the end of summer. As parents adjust to their new fall routines, scores of competing obligations and responsibilities highlight the difficulty of raising well-grounded kids with good core values. Combine this perpetual struggle with the effects of technological distractions, societal lack of discipline, and communication breakdowns, and it is not hard to understand why so many parents throw up their hands in defeat and accept mere survival.

“For many families, the stark contrast of transitioning from a lazy summer to a hectic school year is often met with resistance,” said Scott Gale, author of Your Family Constitution. “But folks at their wits end needn’t revert to survival parenting. Instead, they can initiate a series of steps designed to help families let go of chaos, establish healthier boundaries and achieve a more harmonious family life.”

Author Scott Gale, who refused to settle for survival, has designed a powerful tool that allowed him to alleviate family challenges through the thoughtful application of clarity, consistency and commitment (the “3Cs”). Your Family Constitution tells his story and provides a step-by-step process that parents can follow to improve family communication, reduce household tension, and improve the time family members spend together.

Our Family Constitution guides readers through a personalized journey of introspection, visioning, household observation, prioritization, and ultimately the creation of manageable boundaries coupled with consistent rewards and consequences. The product of their labor is a Family Constitution – a clear and consistent set of rules customized to the needs and circumstances of their household.

About Your Family Constitution
Your Family Constitution is a common-sense playbook to reaching family harmony. The principles and tools developed by author Scott Gale to improve his own family relationships, can be applied by today’s parents who routinely juggle “bowling balls” (the weighty needs of career, family, marriage and themselves). Your Family Constitution provides a fun, healthy model for family structure, togetherness and growth, which enables families to create more quality time by minimizing destructive behaviors. Stop listening to well-intentioned parenting advice and reading countless family help books and create Your (own) Family Constitution today. Powerful Secret to Reduce Debt – Learn How to Sell Anything Fast

Struggling to get out from under a pile of debt, like many Americans? People in financial trouble often try to make more money or cut their expenses, but they neglect a simple, effective strategy. How to sell anything you don’t need to help reduce debt.

So says author James B. Savage, who wrote the book Sell It Fast: How to sell almost anything with effective low-cost classified ads. “You can sell anything around the house to reduce debt quickly and easily in newspaper classified ads,” he says. “But you need to know how and where to advertise.”

Savage teaches consumers how to price items correctly and place them in online and in-print classified ads, many of which are free or inexpensive.

Many people fail at selling items in classifieds because they don’t know techniques he has mastered over 15 years. Or they avoid trying to sell their old stuff entirely because they believe it is expensive, difficult or a hassle.

Great sell-anything-fast items include cars, motorcycles, kitchen appliances, furniture, lawn mowers, electronics, televisions, cell phones, electronic games and tools or anything that has value, according to Savage.

He advises people to reduce debt by selling items which they are paying off monthly. This only works “as long as you do not owe more than the item is worth,” he cautions.

Sell It Fast tells you:

• How to find the right buyer
• Where to advertise free or at little cost
• The tricks to make your ad better than others
• How to save money advertising
• Why you shouldn’t trade in your car because you can sell it yourself for its real value
• Profit-making tips to sell hobby items and collectibles
• 2 must-do things to make your ad work
• The No. 1 secret to get the best price
• Ways to cut or stop unnecessary responses
• How to prevent getting ripped off by thieves
• And much, much more.

In addition, Savage’s book helps you write the perfect classified quickly with its ad forms. They helped him sell a $5,500 lawn mower in the middle of winter and without any selling expenses.

Sell It Fast – the only tool you’ll need to sell anything and reduce debt – is available at amazon.com or at http://sellanythingfast.com.

Juliet, Naked – Nick Hornby’s Latest Novel

Penguin has announced the publication of Juliet, Naked, the long awaited novel from Nick Hornby, which sees him return to the music world and will be released by Viking in hardback.

Juliet, Naked, Nick’s latest novel for adults after a four year wait since A Long Way Down, is about the nature of creativity and obsession, and how two lonely people can gradually find each other.

Juliet, Naked tells the story of Annie and Duncan, a mid-thirties couple whose shared interest in musician Tucker Crowe brings them together before ultimately splitting them apart.

Tony Lacey, Nick’s editor at Penguin, said: “Fans of Hornby’s High Fidelity will doubtless be delighted to learn that his next novel takes him back into the music world, though nowhere near the north London of Fever Pitch. His protagonist is a reclusive 80s rock star who is forced out of isolation when the release of a stripped-down version of his most famous album brings him into contact with some of his most passionate fans. Set in America and Lincolnshire, the novel tells the story of two lonely people finding each other across decades and continents.”

Nick Hornby was born in 1957. He is the author of five previous novels, High Fidelity, About a Boy, How To Be Good, A Long Way Down (shortlisted for the Whitbread Award) and Slam; three works of non-fiction, Fever Pitch (winner of the William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award), 31 Songs (shortlisted for the National Books Critics Circle Award) and The Complete Polysyllabic Spree; and a Pocket Penguin book of short stories, Otherwise Pandemonium. He recently wrote the screenplay for the film An Education, which won the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival and is due for release in the UK in October 2009. Nick Hornby lives and works in Highbury, north London.

Penguin will publish Juliet, Naked in September 2009, adding to the complete list of Nick Hornby books already available on the Penguin website, as well as the blog which Nick updates.

Enter The World Of “Make Believe” And Read About The Legend Of The Bear Lake Monster, Long Family Traditions, A Tender Love Story, And A Few Mysterious Events!

Scotland has the Lock Ness Monster and Bear Lake Valley has theirs. Do they really exist? The mystery of the Bear Lake Monster has been an exciting part of Idaho history since the early 1800s. David begins to wonder about this legend in “David and the Bear Lake Monster” (ISBN: 978-1-58982-532-1 / American Book Publishing). As the waves splash gently upon the shore and the full moon shines brightly upon Bear Lake, a deep foreboding is in the air and the fawn, sipping from the lake, can sense it. His ears perk up and he stands still. Only the sounds of nature can be heard, but the deer senses that he is in danger and quickly darts away. A few feet from shore, the water abruptly parts and exposes a gigantic brown lump about 90-feet long. Water trickles down its sides as it floats in the stillness of the night.

Midwest Book Review wrote: “With a blend of romance, this deftly written historical fiction series is well deserving of a place in community library historical fiction collections.”

When David returns to the Robert’s family for a visit, he learns about the great Indian legend: the Bear Lake Monster. When he discovers people still believe in this legend, he sets out to prove that it doesn’t exist but the community is insulted that anyone would try to discredit something they have believed in for years. Their legend is sacred to them and part of Bear Lake history. Searching for true happiness, David is reunited with the Roberts family, trying to overcome his troubles! David quickly becomes one with the town and its folk. He finds himself entranced with one very special lady and ends up defending her honor several times. She isn’t like the average woman. Sarah is different. This beautiful and charming woman has a disability that no one seems to notice. He finds out that Sarah has gone through more trials than the average person. She teaches him the importance of not dwelling on the past and how to love life. After a few teases, tricks, and mischievous deeds, David begins to overcome his troubles. As time passes, he realizes he must now face the dilemma of choosing between his work and matters of the heart.

“David and the Bear Lake Monster will keep readers entertained right up to the last page,” wrote Kim Atchue-Cusella of Book Loons. “Linda Weaver Clarke creates another winner with this installment of her Family Saga in Bear Lake Valley series.”

About the Author
Linda Weaver Clarke was raised on a farm surrounded by the rolling hills of southern Idaho. She now makes her home in southern Utah among the beautiful red mountains. Clarke travels throughout the United States, teaching a “Family Legacy Workshop,” encouraging others to turn their family history and autobiography into a variety of interesting stories. Clarke is the author of the historical fiction series, “A Family Saga in Bear Lake, Idaho,” which includes the following novels: Melinda and the Wild West – a semi-finalist for the “Reviewers Choice Award 2007,” Edith and the Mysterious Stranger, Jenny’s Dream, David and the Bear Lake Monster, and Elena, Woman of Courage.

Penguin Has Announced The Publication Of “The Original Of Laura”, The Final Book By Novelist Vladimir Nabokov

Penguin has announced the publication of “The Original of Laura”, the final book by novelist Vladimir Nabokov, a novel which has been the source of much anxiety and contention for Nabokov’s fans and his family.

The Original of Laura which exists on 138 index cards, was complete in Nabokov’s mind, though he died before he could translate his vision onto paper. He asked for the manuscript to be destroyed, so his wife Vera, and later his son Dmitri, faced an agonising choice whether to publish the book or not. After three decades in a Swiss vault, “The Original of Laura”, an extraordinarily beautiful novel, unprecedented in structure and style, will be published for the first time.

In Dmitri’s introduction to his father’s last novel, he recalls that it was only chance that saved an earlier book, “Lolita”, from the incinerator. He has been guided by the precedent of that other book’s survival in choosing to see “The Original of Laura” published.

Dmitri Nabokov, the son of Vladimir said: “When the task passed to me, I did a great deal of thinking. I have said and written more than once that, to me, my parents, in a sense, had never died, but lived on, looking over my shoulder in a kind of virtual limbo, available to offer a thought or counsel in order to assist me with a vital decision, were it a crucial mot juste or some more mundane concern. I decided at this juncture, that, in putative retrospect, Nabokov would not have wanted me to allow a new “Juanita Dark” – for that was an early working title of “Lolita”, destined for cremation – to burn like a latter-day Jeanne d’Arc.”

Penguin is celebrating all Vladimir Nabokov’s writing in three tranches with beautiful new jackets for the entire backlist.

Alexis Kirschbaum, Editor for Penguin Classics said: “Penguin Classics is thrilled that after over 30 years of deliberation, Dmitri Nabokov has at last agreed to let his father’s unfinished final novel, “The Original of Laura” be published. To make the most of this historic literary moment, Penguin Classics plans to republish Nabokov’s entire backlist, as if for the first time, to introduce the public to novels which they may not have heard of before. “Lolita” is only the beginning; from the humour of “Pnin”, to the satire on tyranny in “Bend Sinister” to the transcendent novel of first love in “Mary”; there already exists a Nabokov novel to be discovered for the first time.”

Vladimir Nabokov was born in St Petersburg. He wrote his first literary works in Russian, but rose to international prominence as a masterly prose stylist for the novels he composed in English, most famously Lolita. Between 1923 and 1940 he published novels, short stories, plays, poems and translations in the Russian language and established himself as one of the most outstanding Russian Émigré writers.

Rain Dance – A Novel That Examines The Volatile Issues Of Abortion And Infertility

Sheaf House Publishers announces the August, 2009 release of Rain Dance by author Joy DeKok.

Rain Dance delves into the often silent battles and surprising hypocrisies found in the lives of women facing these two personal crisis.

Publisher and editorial director Joan Shoup contracted Rain Dance because it fits the editorial guidelines and the commitment of Sheaf House to publish novels written with excellence, that are unafraid to dive deep into the heart of sometimes “untouchable” topics, and offer a powerful redemptive message for readers.

“Rain Dance is the perfect fit for Sheaf House,” Shoup says. “The author has written a beautiful story her test readers and reviewers love. She didn’t shy away from the difficult and refused to end the novel with ‘happily ever after.’”

Author Joy DeKok comments, “I’m dedicated to writing with integrity – my faith demands it and the story, which is both plot and character driven, required it. I didn’t choose this topic. It chose me one day while I was cleaning the house. I told God I thought it was a great idea and I hoped He’d find an author for it. Although I argued with Him for almost a year, I realized, He already had His author. Me.”

Rain Dance joins the impressive Sheaf House line up August of 2009.

Endorser Sue Liljenberg, International Director, of Healing Hearts Ministries says, “This book is a must read for all women. Although it is a fictional story the author has brilliantly captured the many issues that women struggle with and offers hope that can only be found in Jesus. She also shows how looking beyond our own circumstances can bring blessings into our lives and the lives of others. I’ve ministered to broken women for over twenty years and I’m thankful for resources like Rain Dance that will reach women who are hurting and give them hope.”

A Five Star Tale Is Reborn

Much like a Broadway play, TV co-producer and writer Mario Bernheim took his novel, Michael’s Reward out of town and came back with five star reviews by some very discerning and enthusiastic readers f r o m coast to coast. This is Bernheim’s first novel.

“Michael’s Reward” takes the Old Testament book of Job and adapts it beat-for-beat in a modern spiritual drama s e t in Santa Barbara , California . The story takes you through a journey of extremes with Michael, a very successful and faithful family man who loses everything because God and Satan have made a wager on his devotion and dedication. Echoing the lives of so many people today, Michael looses what he thought was important, but finds that the depth of his faith in God proves to be his salvation in every way.

Mario Bernheim started his career in the entertainment industry at Universal Studios working for movie director Joel Schumacher. He was a founding staff member of Comic Relief on HBO, hosted by Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams. Mario spent 12 years administering and co-producing TV specials to raise money and awareness for America ‘s homeless.

Having visited so many homeless shelters across the country Mr. Bernheim drew both inspiration and details for his book f r o m those people who were looking for help and a way back to a life they once knew. Bernheim added, “Whether it’s Job who lived this story three thousand years ago or someone in Anywhere, USA , this story will show us that faith doesn’t come easy but its rewards are immeasurable”.

This Is For The Mara Salvatrucha Inside the MS-13, America’s Most Violent Gang by Samuel Logan

ADVANCE PRAISE

“A searing, trenchant investigation into the alluring and tragic world of twenty-first-century organized crime.” – DAVID D. DANELO, author of The Border

“This is war reporting from America’s urban underworld. Logan’s examination of the MS-13 through the eyes of its foot soldiers is authoritative, and scary.” – ANDY WEBB-VIDAL, CEO, Latin-IQ

“As [Logan] exposes the tragic life-and-death story of Brenda Paz, he escorts us into the world of the MS-13 and all their wicked, butchering violence that America is only now becoming aware of.” – JAY DOBYNS, author of No Angel

“[A] groundbreaking case study. The inner workings and social context of MS-13 are presented in a gripping, dynamic, and readable narrative.” – JOHN P. SULLIVAN, senior research fellow, Center for Advanced Studies on Terrorism, and originator of third-generation gang theory

In THIS IS FOR THE MARA SALVATRUCHA: Inside the MS-13, America’s Most Violent Gang (Hyperion; July 7, 2009; hardcover; $24.99) investigative journalist Samuel Logan offers the first English-language profile of a group the FBI calls “the fastest growing and most violent gang in the country.” Formed by Salvadoran immigrants on the rough streets of Los Angeles in the 1980s, the Mara Salvatrucha – or MS-13 – has now grown to more than 60,000 members worldwide. The FBI has created a special task force to curb its expansion, something it has never done before, even for high-profile gangs like the Bloods, the Crips, and the Mexican Mafia. Despite such efforts, though, the MS-13 continues to grow, seeping deeper into the neighborhoods of America and bringing with it violence, extortion, fear, and crime.

THIS IS FOR THE MARA SALVATRUCHA follows the tragic story of one MS-13 member, a charismatic Honduran-American teenager named Brenda Paz. Brenda became a “jumped in” member of the gang at age fifteen, lured by the camaraderie of members and the excitement of street life. She witnessed and helped to commit many crimes, and was arrested at sixteen in connection with a robbery. Eager to escape the brutality she had begun to encounter so regularly, Brenda began sharing her knowledge of the gang with authorities. Her inside accounts of the MS-13’s most violent acts, private traditions, and secret symbols were thorough and invaluable to officials. But the Mara Salvatrucha has rules, and despite being in the FBI’s Witness Protection Program, Brenda was found dead within a year.

While other reporters have focused on the horrifying circumstances of Brenda’s murder – she was 17, pregnant, and killed by her boyfriend – Logan provides an in-depth portrait of this fascinating young woman and her life in the gang. He interviewed all the key players in Brenda’s last years of life, including her loving family, fellow MS-13 members, the law enforcement officers and lawyers who tried to help Brenda escape the gang, and the families of the victims of the gang’s violence. The result is a compelling and frightening narrative that delves deeper into the MS-13 than any book has before and offers a potent warning against the seductions and dangers of gang life.

Beyond illuminating Brenda’s story, Logan also sheds light on important issues for America’s growing Latino population, touching on effects of immigration, deportation, and the daily realities of at-risk and underserved youths in the immigrant community. He can speak to:

1. United States Immigration policy in recent years, particularly the effects of aggressive deportation
2. The appeal of the gang lifestyle and how we can help at-risk youths escape the temptation
3. The structure of the MS-13 and the threat it poses in this country and others
4. Drug and arms trafficking and associated violence on the U.S.-Mexico border
5. Law enforcement efforts to contain and prevent gang activity
6. How and why Hispanic street gangs have grown into international crime organizations
7. The immigrant experience in this country and ways in which our police and justice systems serve and disserve immigrants

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Samuel Logan is an investigative reporter based in Latin America. For the past five years, he has reported on gang activity across the United States, Mexico, and Central America. Mr. Logan’s work has attracted the attention of private intelligence companies, the Inter-American Dialogue, Booz Allen Hamilton, the National Security Agency, the Eurasia Group, the RAND corporation, Control Risks Group, the European Security Institute, Kroll, the International Crisis Group, agents with the Drug Enforcement Administration, analysts with U.S. Southern Command, the Cambridge Energy Research Associates, the Federation of American Scientists, and other organizations that maintain open channels of dialogue with him about all matters pertaining to security in Latin America and how it affects security in the United States.
